Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. Pak, China hold 4th Round of Maritime Cooperation

Pakistan and China on Thursday held the fourth round of maritime dialogue to review the bilateral maritime cooperation. During the session, an in-depth exchange of views on the entire spectrum of bilateral maritime cooperation was held, including naval exchanges, regional cooperation, development of maritime infrastructure, collaboration in fisheries, science and technology, search and rescue missions, maritime disaster management and combating maritime pollution, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office spokesperson. Director General (China) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Mohammad Aamir Khan and Deputy Director General of Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of Chinese MFA Wang Jinfeng co-chaired the consultations. Jinfeng later called on Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, the additional secretary (Asia-Pacific) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two sides expressed satisfaction at time-tested Pakistan-China friendship and All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership between the two countries while committing to further expanding bilateral maritime cooperation. The two sides also noted the evolving regional and global maritime changes and agreed that their mutual cooperation was in-line with their shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Asia-Pacific region. Emphasising the need to advance practical cooperation to jointly respond to emerging threats and challenges, the two sides agreed to maintain the momentum of bilateral exchanges and to promote ties between the navies of the two countries. It was agreed that the 5th round of Maritime Dialogue will be held in China next year. app

A bridge collapsed at a cobalt mine in southeast Democratic Republic of Congo killing at least 32 wildcat miners, a regional government official said Sunday. US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone. The 19-day exercises, dubbed "Balikatan 2024," will involve around 5,000 Philippine and 11,000 US troops, making it the largest joint military drills between the two allies conducted in decades, local English daily Manila Times reported citing the military.
