24 dead after bus falls into river while boarding ferry in Bangladesh

At least 24 people died after a passenger bus carrying around ​40 passengers plunged into the Padma ‌River while attempting to board a ferry in Bangladesh, officials said on Thursday. The accident occurred ​on Wednesday when the bus lost ​control approaching a ferry at Daulatdia ⁠in Rajbari district, about 100 kilometres from Dhaka. The bus overturned and sank ​nearly nine metres into the river, according to police and the Fire Service and Civil ​Defence. Landslide buries houses in eastern Afghanistan, many killed

At least five bodies were retrieved from mud after a landslide buried houses in eastern Afghanistan, local officials said on Monday. The landslide hit at least 20 houses in the Tatin village of the Nurgram district in the eastern Nuristan province, the Kabul-based Hurriyat Radio English reported. Efforts to recover others are underway, it added. Provincial officials expressed fears that the number of casualties may increase. Meanwhile, two miners were killed and another person was injured after being hit by an avalanche in the northeastern Panjshir province. US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone.
