New Delhi says attack that sank Indian-flagged ship off Oman’s coast ‘unacceptable’

New Delhi condemned an attack that sank an Indian-flagged vessel transiting through Omani waters as “unacceptable” on Thursday and said commercial ships should not be targeted amid the US-Israeli war with Iran. The attack on the dhow — a wooden vessel — occurred while it was sailing from Somalia to the United Arab Emirates in the early hours of Wednesday, causing a fire on board that eventually led to the ship sinking, New Delhi said. All 14 crew members were rescued by the Omani coast guard and taken to Diba port, India added. India did not specify the nature of the attack or identify who was responsible. However, British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the explosion was believed to have been caused by a drone or missile strike. Indian Navy rescues hijacked Iranian fishing vessel in Arabian Sea

The Indian Navy rescued an Iranian fishing vessel and its crew of Pakistani nationals after it responded to a piracy attack in the Arabian Sea, according to a statement. The navy said late Friday that it had received information about a “potential piracy incident” onboard the Al-Kambar on Thursday night and two Indian naval ships were diverted to intercept the vessel. It said it was reported to have been boarded by nine armed pirates. “After more than 12 hours of intense coercive tactical measures … the pirates on board the hijacked fishing vessel were forced to surrender. The crew, comprising 23 Pakistani nationals, have been safely rescued,” said the navy, adding that the vessel was intercepted early Friday. Amid attacks in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, India has also deployed warships as a "force deterrent" in the region.
