Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. Teenager dies after quack uses YouTube for failed surgery in India

A 15-year-old boy has died after a fake doctorattempted a gallbladder surgery by watching YouTube videos in India's Bihar state. The boy, Krishna Kumar, was admitted to a local hospital in Patna, Bihar. He was reportedly suffering from severe vomiting. Doctors diagnosed him with gallstones and suggested surgery, but the family initially refused, believing he had recovered after a drip was adminisered to him. However, another person Ajit Kumar who identified as a doctor later insisted the surgery was necessary. During the operation, the boy’s condition deteriorated, and the Kumar, along with his staff, abandoned him at the steps of a larger hospital. The boy was declared dead shortly after. The family has lodged a complaint with the local police, alleging negligence and malpractice by Ajit Kumar. They argue that he lacked qualifications and experience, and his actions resulted in the teenager's death. A case has been filed against the unqualified doctor and his clinic staff. The police are carrying out raids to capture Ajit Kumar and his associates. The teenager's body has been sent for a postmortem examination. The clinic has been sealed as investigations continue.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone. The 19-day exercises, dubbed "Balikatan 2024," will involve around 5,000 Philippine and 11,000 US troops, making it the largest joint military drills between the two allies conducted in decades, local English daily Manila Times reported citing the military.
