Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. Samsung pulled off a surprise reveal during its Galaxy Unpacked event, showcasing the ultra-slim Galaxy S25 Edge. The teaser has stirred excitement in the tech community as it appears to challenge Apple’s rumoured iPhone 17 Air. The Galaxy S25 Edge features dual rear cameras and a pinhole front camera, paired with a display that pushes the boundaries of screen real estate. The phone was shown alongside prototypes of the S25 and S25 Ultra, further emphasising its slim design. Aggressive heat management layers appear to be part of the phone’s internal design, likely to support the same powerful chips used in the other Galaxy S25 models. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to debut in the first half of 2025, with a price lower than the S25 Ultra, making it a competitive option in the premium smartphone market. While Apple’s iPhone 17 Air has been generating speculation, Samsung’s bold move to preempt its launch underscores the fierce competition in the ultra-slim smartphone segment.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone.
