Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. Freeze warning to affect North Alabama on Friday

A freeze warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for several North Alabama counties. The warning will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Friday, affecting Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb, and Cullman counties. According to the weather service, temperatures could drop as low as 27°F to 31°F during this period, creating hazardous conditions for sensitive plants and outdoor infrastructure. Frost and freeze conditions may kill crops and other vulnerable vegetation, while unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage. The National Weather Service advises residents to take precautionary measures to protect tender plants and plumbing. Protective measures recommended The weather service highlights that freeze warnings are issued during periods of expected sub-freezing temperatures between 29°F and 32°F, usually occurring from May to October. However, warnings can be extended if necessary. If temperatures are expected to fall into these thresholds, a freeze watch may be issued ahead of time, allowing for precautionary actions. When a freeze warning or watch is issued, residents are urged to protect their plants. If possible, move sensitive plants indoors as they are likely to be killed by the freeze, depending on the severity of the weather conditions.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported.
