Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. UAE to deploy AI, drones for Shawwal crescent sighting

The UAE Fatwa Council has conveneed the Shawwal Crescent Sighting Committee (today) on March 29, deploying artificial intelligence and drone technology to enhance moon sighting accuracy. The meeting will take place at the historic Al-Hosn site in Abu Dhabi, chosen for its cultural and national significance. Five AI-powered national observatories will participate in the effort, using advanced technology to analyse images, process data, and determine the crescent moon’s visibility. Drones equipped with high-precision lenses will be launched from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory, rising over 300 metres to capture clear images of the moon. "The drones will be directed toward the location of the moon based on precise astronomical calculations," officials said, noting that this will help overcome visibility challenges. This marks the second time the UAE has deployed drones for crescent sighting, having previously pioneered the use of drones to detect the Ramadan crescent. Several astronomical centres and agencies across the UAE will collaborate to enhance the observation process. The committee has also invited traditional crescent moon sighters, known as Al Shawwafs, to participate and submit their testimonies via official channels. The committee will be chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, President of the UAE Fatwa Council, and Dr Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Vice President of the Council, alongside experts in Sharia, astronomy, and law.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone.
