No catch for the day: Pakistan's tuna trade caught in US-Iran crossfire

In Iranian waters, a strange trade is taking place — Pakistani fishermen exchange subsidised Iranian fuel for high-value tuna, a barter system now under threat from escalating United States-Iran tensions. Shah Zamin Khan is among thousands of Pakistani tuna traders whose lucrative business has been at a near standstill since February, when the war between the US, Israel and Iran began. The recent targeting of Iranian seaports by Washington has made matters worse. Iran's southern ports of Konarak, Pasabandar and Beris, which border Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province and serve as key fish trade hubs, are among the sites targeted by US airstrikes in recent weeks. When is Eidul Fitr in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi astronomers have forecast a possible sighting of the Shawwal moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, signalling the end of Ramadan and the arrival of Eidul Fitr. According to Arab media reports, the moon is expected to be born at around 2 PM local time on Saturday. Experts believe it will remain visible for approximately eight minutes after sunset, making it likely to be spotted in parts of the kingdom. However, Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) presented a differing view. In a recent statement, the agency said the likelihood of moon visibility in Saudi Arabia on March 29 is extremely low, as the moon's age at sunset in Makkah would be around five hours—insufficient for clear sighting. SUPARCO forecasts the crescent will be visible in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries on Sunday, March 30. Therefore, both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are expected to celebrate Eidul Fitr on Monday, March 31. Moreover, the government of Pakistan announced the public holidays on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, granting a three-day break. According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division last week, the holidays will commence from Monday, March 31, to Wednesday, April 2. Additionally, the decision has taken to enable citizens nationwide to observe the religious occasion with family. Offices and businesses will remain close from March 31 to April 2 and resuming from April 3. Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, along with zonal committees, will convene on March 30 (Sunday evening) to sight the moon of Shawwal.
