Record-breaking heat wave grips western United States

A record early heat wave striking the western United States on Friday is a one-in-500-year event and almost certainly the result of human-caused climate change, experts say. The heat has been toppling records this week and is set to continue into the weekend across western cities while expanding eastward. Four locations in the desert area near the California-Arizona border registered 44.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, a US national record for March. The readings were recorded near Yuma and Martinez Lake in Arizona, and around Winterhaven and Ogilby in California. When is Eidul Fitr in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi astronomers have forecast a possible sighting of the Shawwal moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, signalling the end of Ramadan and the arrival of Eidul Fitr. According to Arab media reports, the moon is expected to be born at around 2 PM local time on Saturday. Experts believe it will remain visible for approximately eight minutes after sunset, making it likely to be spotted in parts of the kingdom. However, Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) presented a differing view. In a recent statement, the agency said the likelihood of moon visibility in Saudi Arabia on March 29 is extremely low, as the moon's age at sunset in Makkah would be around five hours—insufficient for clear sighting. SUPARCO forecasts the crescent will be visible in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries on Sunday, March 30. Therefore, both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are expected to celebrate Eidul Fitr on Monday, March 31. Moreover, the government of Pakistan announced the public holidays on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, granting a three-day break. According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division last week, the holidays will commence from Monday, March 31, to Wednesday, April 2. Additionally, the decision has taken to enable citizens nationwide to observe the religious occasion with family. Offices and businesses will remain close from March 31 to April 2 and resuming from April 3. Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, along with zonal committees, will convene on March 30 (Sunday evening) to sight the moon of Shawwal.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops
