Iran says coastal attack will lead to full Gulf closure and mine-laying

An attack on Iran's southern coast and islands will lead to Gulf routes being cut with the laying of sea mines, the country's Defence Council said on Monday, according to state media. The US is considering plans to occupy or blockade Iran's Kharg Island, the country's main oil export hub, to pressure Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping, according to Axios. "Any attempt to attack Iran's coasts or islands will cause all access routes in the Gulf (...) to be mined with various types of sea mines, including floating mines that can be released from the coast," the statement read. "In this case, the entire Gulf will practically be in a situation similar to the Strait of Hormuz for a long time (...) One should not forget the failure of more than 100 minesweepers in the 1980s in removing a few sea mines." Man sentenced to death for murder of ex-wife

A sessions court in Rawalpindi sentenced a man to be hanged until death for murdering his former wife, a US citizen, over a property dispute worth billions of rupees, Express News reported on Wednesday. The convict, Rizwan Habib, was handed the death penalty, a fine of Rs500,000, and additional sentences for kidnapping and evidence tampering. The court also sentenced co-accused Sultan to seven years in prison and a Rs100,000 fine. The sentencing was announced in the presence of three US diplomats and an FBI officer, who expressed satisfaction over the outcome. According to the case, Habib lured his ex-wife, Wajiha Swati, to Pakistan in October 2021 under the pretext of a reconciliation. She was killed upon arrival, and her body was later found buried in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa after being secretly moved from Rawalpindi. Habib had initially reported Swati missing, but confessed to the crime during police interrogation. The victim’s son had lodged the initial complaint from the United States via online FIR. The case was earlier remanded by the High Court, but a fresh verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Majid Hussain Ghadi. US authorities monitored proceedings throughout. US forensic experts had confirmed death due to torture after a second autopsy conducted upon repatriation of the body. Government prosecutor Iffat Sultana represented the victim’s side in the trial.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone.
