Iran says coastal attack will lead to full Gulf closure and mine-laying

An attack on Iran's southern coast and islands will lead to Gulf routes being cut with the laying of sea mines, the country's Defence Council said on Monday, according to state media. The US is considering plans to occupy or blockade Iran's Kharg Island, the country's main oil export hub, to pressure Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping, according to Axios. "Any attempt to attack Iran's coasts or islands will cause all access routes in the Gulf (...) to be mined with various types of sea mines, including floating mines that can be released from the coast," the statement read. "In this case, the entire Gulf will practically be in a situation similar to the Strait of Hormuz for a long time (...) One should not forget the failure of more than 100 minesweepers in the 1980s in removing a few sea mines." Valerie the Dachshund found safe after 529 days on the run in Australia

Valerie, a miniature dachshund missing for 529 days on South Australia's Kangaroo Island, has been safely captured thanks to an elaborate rescue effort by Kangala Wildlife Rescue. Rescuers Jared and Lisa Karran revealed they used a specially designed remote-controlled trap, filled with familiar items like Valerie’s toys, bedding, and strips of her owner's clothing, to lure the 4kg dog. Over two weeks, they gradually introduced these items to make Valerie feel secure. “We created her own little room,” said Jared Karran. “When she was comfortable inside, we waited for the right moment and remotely closed the door.” Valerie’s owners, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock, described as "over the moon," had long hoped for her safe return. After capture, Valerie reportedly adapted well, showing signs of recognition and calmness rather than fear. Wildlife rescuers carefully managed her reintroduction to human contact to avoid trauma. Valerie’s first meal after capture included roast chicken and her favorite dog food. "Her mental health was our biggest concern," Lisa Karran said, emphasizing a slow and gentle recovery process. Valerie is now wearing a specially fitted escape-proof harness and will remain on the island for a decompression period before reuniting with her owners. The rescue closes a remarkable chapter for Valerie, whose story had captivated local communities during her 16 months at large.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported.
