24 dead after bus falls into river while boarding ferry in Bangladesh

At least 24 people died after a passenger bus carrying around ​40 passengers plunged into the Padma ‌River while attempting to board a ferry in Bangladesh, officials said on Thursday. The accident occurred ​on Wednesday when the bus lost ​control approaching a ferry at Daulatdia ⁠in Rajbari district, about 100 kilometres from Dhaka. The bus overturned and sank ​nearly nine metres into the river, according to police and the Fire Service and Civil ​Defence. Nine killed, including five children, in stabbing attack in Suriname

At least nine people, including five children, were killed in a stabbing attack in Suriname’s capital Paramaribo, police said on Sunday. According to authorities, the suspect attacked neighbours and children during the overnight incident, using a sharp object. Four adults and five minors were killed, while a sixth child and another adult sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital. Police said officers opened fire when the suspect attempted to attack them during the arrest. He was shot in the legs and remains hospitalised under guard. Investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing.

US, Philippines kick off joint military drills in South China Sea with 16,000 troops

Some 16,000 US and Philippine troops kicked off the annual joint military drills on Monday in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), local media reported. WPS is the official designation by Philippines to the parts of the South China Sea that are included in the country's exclusive economic zone. The 19-day exercises, dubbed "Balikatan 2024," will involve around 5,000 Philippine and 11,000 US troops, making it the largest joint military drills between the two allies conducted in decades, local English daily Manila Times reported citing the military.
