New York's Muslims reclaim their city after 9/11 backlash

Asad Dandia was eight when he watched the September 11, 2001 attacks on television at his Pakistani-immigrant parents' home in New York. Then came the backlash -- years of Islamophobia as Americans processed attacks that had killed nearly 3,000 people. There was anger, suspicion, and worse. At 19, Dandia experienced a police informant posing as a friend to infiltrate his family home, part of a now-disgraced surveillance effort purportedly seeking to detect Islamic extremism. Today, though, the 33-year-old historian finds a New York transformed: one with its first Muslim mayor, public prayers in Times Square and new mosques rising across the city. More than 1,900 dead in Iran since start of US-Israel strikes: IFRC

More than 1,900 people have ​been killed and ‌at least 20,000 injured in Iran ​since the ​start of United States and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic, ​said Maria Martinez of ​the International Federation of Red Cross and ​Red Crescent ​Societies (IFRC) on Friday, citing figures ‌provided ⁠by the Iranian Red Crescent. A woman who sought nearly $5,000 in damages after being bitten by a dog on Christmas Eve has had her claim dismissed, after a British Columbia tribunal ruled the incident amounted to an accident — and that “every dog is entitled to one bite.” Ying Shen was bitten on the hand by a mini Australian Shepherd named Juliet as she stepped out of an elevator in her apartment building in Vancouver on 24 December 2022.
