Spain checks 200 Italy arrivals in border controls after migration row

Spain checked around 200 travellers arriving from Italy at the country's six largest airports on the first day of border controls reintroduced following a dispute with Italy over irregular migration. Spain's Interior Ministry carried out checks on a total of 199 people on 12 flights from Italy to airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante and Valencia, it said late on Saturday. Spain said on Friday border controls for flights and ships from Italy would remain in force until September 7 after Rome applied its own measures, which it said were motivated by the mass migration rush by 72,000 people to Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on July 30. 👮‍♀️ Restablecidos los controles fronterizos a los viajeros procedentes de #Italia. 📌 Ante la persistente presión migratoria irregular que sufre el país transalpino. 🔛 Desde est...

Explainer: What is the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia-Turkiye defence pact?

Outlining the rationale behind the Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Turkiye and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), security analysts on Friday described it as the natural evolution and formal codification of decades of historic ties among the three countries. According to the analysts, Pakistan's relationship with Turkiye predates its own independence and is rooted in the Khilafat Movement (1919–1924). Likewise, they said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have long shared close strategic, political, economic and people-to-people contact based on mutual trust and common interests. A changing regional environment Security analysts said the region is undergoing a major strategic transformation and faces multiple threats. Regional conflicts, security challenges and the changing character of warfare, they argued, underscore the need for greater cooperation among countries sharing common aspirations based on stability. According to the sources, a trilateral framework offers a mechanism to preserve regional stability and strengthen collective security “rather than representing any religious-based convergence”. A defensive, not offensive, pact The proposed Trilateral Defence Agreement is “purely defensive”, security analysts stated. According to them, it is based on the principles of collective security and collective deterrence, ensuring that any external attack on one member becomes a threat to all three, as the cascading domino effects of such an attack would hurt the stability, prosperity and future of all three countries as well as the wider region. The agreement, they maintained, is not directed “against any country” and is intended to prevent conflict through credible deterrence while promoting peace and stability. Three nations, three strategic strengths Security analysts further said the partnership brings together complementary strengths. According to them, Pakistan contributes military strength, battle-hardened forces and strategic expertise based on astute management of escalation control through strength. Saudi Arabia contributes its centrality in the region, strong economy and powerful, clear-headed leadership, while Turkiye brings advanced defence technology, resilience and industrial capabilities, they said. Together, these strengths, guided by their respective strategic leaders, create a balanced security architecture capable of addressing emerging regional challenges, they added. Pakistan as a net regional stabiliser Security analysts said Pakistan, following Operation Marka-e-Haq against India in May 2025 and its lead role in mediating the US-Iran military conflict, is increasingly emerging as a net regional stabiliser. According to the sources, Pakistan's sincere and competent leadership, together with its constructive relations with Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran and others in the region, as well as with the United States and China globally, “enables it to serve as a trusted bridge between regional and global stakeholders”. Leadership built on sincerity, clarity and competence The credibility of the framework rests on the sincerity, clarity and competence of the Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani leadership, the analysts stressed. According to them, the countries’ leaders have consistently demonstrated the ability to manage crises responsibly, combine military preparedness with strategic restraint and pursue diplomacy without compromising national security. Collective security and collective deterrence By pooling military capabilities, intelligence cooperation and strategic coordination, the three countries would establish a framework of collective security and collective deterrence, as per the analysts. They said this would “significantly raise the cost of aggression” while reducing the likelihood of conflict through credible defence cooperation. Pakistan's emerging strategic role Security analysts stressed that the Trilateral Defence Pact is “not Muslim NATO” and involves no nuclear backstopping. Instead, it represents the next logical step in the strategic partnership between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye for common people-centric prosperity. They described it as a defensive, non-aggressive alliance designed to strengthen collective security and collective deterrence rather than target any state. The framework embodies self-dependence rather than looking to others for security, codifies what was already there, empowers stability, and only makes the historical disruptors of peace in the region nervous, they added.

At least 32 miners dead after bridge fails at cobalt site in southeast DR Congo

A bridge collapsed at a cobalt mine in southeast Democratic Republic of Congo killing at least 32 wildcat miners, a regional government official said Sunday. The bridge came down Saturday onto a flooded zone at the mine in Lualaba province, Roy Kaumba Mayonde, the provincial interior minister, told reporters. He said 32 bodies had been recovered and more were being searched for. The DRC produces more than 70 percent of the world supply of cobalt, which is essential for batteries used in electric cars, many laptop computers and mobile phones. More than 200,000 people are estimated to be working in giant illegal cobalt mines in the giant central African country. Local authorities said the bridge collapsed at the Kalando mine, about 42 kilometres (26 miles) southeast of the Lualaba provincial capital, Kolwezi. "Despite a formal ban on access to the site because of the heavy rain and the risk of a landslide, wildcat miners forced their way into the quarry," said Mayonde. He said ...

Indian devotees splurge on jets, gold idols as Hindu temple opens

The private jet parking lots at airports near the Indian city of Ayodhya are full and the shops have run out of gold-plated idols, as wealthy devotees prepare for the invite-only opening ceremony of one of Hinduism's holiest temples. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Asia's richest man Mukesh Ambani are among the 8,000 or so attendees at Monday's inauguration event for the Ram Temple, which devotees believe is built on the birthplace of Lord Ram, a sacred Hindu deity. The construction of the temple, which began after the Supreme Court awarded the site to Hindus in 2019 more than two decades after a Hindu mob razed a mosque there, triggering deadly riots, fulfils a key campaign promise of Modi and his Hindu nationalist party. Arab countries, Pakistan likely to observe Eid on same day

The International Astronomy Centre confirmed on Wednesday that the crescent moon of Shawwal will be impossible to sight on Saturday, March 29, across all regions of the Arab and Islamic world. This is due to the moon setting before the sun, with the conjunction occurring after sunset. As a result, observing the crescent moon, whether by the naked eye, telescopes, or other means, will be unfeasible on March 29. For countries requiring an actual sighting to mark the start of Shawwal, Ramadan will likely extend to 30 days, with Eid Al Fitr falling on Monday, March 31. However, in some regions where the conjunction occurs before sunset, allowing the moon to set after sunset, some countries may choose to declare Eid on Sunday, March 30, following traditional moon-sighting practices. Notably, a partial solar eclipse will be visible at noon on Saturday in parts of the western Arab world, including Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. This event serves as definitive proof that the cresce...
