Feminist activist Gloria Steinem dies at age 92

Gloria Steinem, the American writer, lecturer, activist and organiser who fought for gender equality and women's civil and reproductive rights for more than five decades, has died, her foundation said. She was 92 years old. The co-founder and consulting editor of Ms Magazine championed the feminist movement from the late 1960s onwards and inspired generations of women. "From reluctant spokesperson to a beacon of positive change, hers is a singular journey — an American leader who can speak to us all," film and theater ‌director Julie Taymor said of Steinem in a 2017 New York Times interview. Taymor directed the 2020 film "The Glorias", depicting Steinem's life across the years and based on her 2015 best-selling autobiography "My Life on the Road". George Clooney says US run by 'least qualified people'

Veteran film star George Clooney said on Wednesday the United States would surmount an "unfortunate" time in its history under the Trump administration, calling it a government run by the "least qualified people". Clooney spoke to the media on the opening day of the Venice Film Festival, where he is to be awarded a Golden Lion for career achievement. In a press conference that touched on his career, artificial intelligence, climate change and the state of the filmmaking industry, Clooney expressed feeling "ashamed" over the US government. "I do believe... we're at a moment in time that's unfortunate. I think that's an understatement," said the 65-year-old star, who has spoken out against the Trump administration in the past. "There's a great word, a kakistocracy, which is a country run by the least qualified people. I think maybe we have a kakistocracy right now, but we'll get through it," he said. Midterm elections in November may provide a "check and balance", he said, while "in 2028 with any luck we'll have some restoration into some normalcy," said Clooney. Calling himself an optimist, Clooney said he remembered living through other dark times in the country's history. "I'm old enough to have been through 1968 in the States when every city in the United States was set on fire, and we lost Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy in the same year," he said. "There was tons of violence. The Capitol was surrounded with tanks," he said. "We've had some other difficult times, but this is one of them." He cited a tweet posted this week by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth appearing to mock the physical appearance of an overweight female Canadian soldier presenting a medal at a youth camp. "Where's the sense of decency in all of this? And I'm ashamed of all of that, but we will get through it," said Clooney. "And we will come out better on the other side."

A woman who sought nearly $5,000 in damages after being bitten by a dog on Christmas Eve has had her claim dismissed, after a British Columbia tribunal ruled the incident amounted to an accident — and that “every dog is entitled to one bite.” Ying Shen was bitten on the hand by a mini Australian Shepherd named Juliet as she stepped out of an elevator in her apartment building in Vancouver on 24 December 2022. The dog, which was leashed and accompanied by neighbour Jeffrey Dale Polo, bit Shen as the two passed each other in the corridor. According to the B.C. Civil Resolution Tribunal’s decision, Polo apologised, saying Juliet was “usually well behaved.” Shen sought medical attention that night at St. Paul’s Hospital, where she was treated for a superficial abrasion and given a tetanus shot.
