Diplomats said the visit, which Macron was undertaking on his way to the annual United Nations General Assembly gathering of world leaders, would also carry symbolic weight after Trump posted a map depicting the US, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean draped in the US flag and labelled "United States of America". The image included Saint Pierre and Miquelon and several French Caribbean territories. France chose not to publicly respond to the post at the time. Any move towards deeper integration is likely to face hurdles. More than a decade after the EU and Canada agreed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), and nine years after its provisional application began, several EU member states have yet to ratify the accord, including France.

A woman who sought nearly $5,000 in damages after being bitten by a dog on Christmas Eve has had her claim dismissed, after a British Columbia tribunal ruled the incident amounted to an accident — and that “every dog is entitled to one bite.” Ying Shen was bitten on the hand by a mini Australian Shepherd named Juliet as she stepped out of an elevator in her apartment building in Vancouver on 24 December 2022.
