Outgoing UN chief makes climate push at New York summit

Fresh from accusing fossil fuel interests of treating the atmosphere like an "open sewer," outgoing United Nations chief Antonio Guterres is set to host his final climate summit Wednesday at the world organisation's New York headquarters. The stakes are clearer than ever, as the impacts of climate change surge around the world — from heat waves and wildfires in Europe to catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet triggered by a glacier collapse. Extreme weather impacts are set to worsen with an El Nino weather pattern that has tied for the most intense ever. And the world is set to shoot past — at least temporarily — 1.5C of warming, beyond which scientists say it will see worse catastrophes from climate change. Student opens fire outside school in Turkiye, 11 pupils wounded

 A student opened fire in front of their high school in Turkiye's western province of Manisa early on Tuesday, wounding at least 11 other pupils, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said. Two of the wounded were in a critical condition, Gurleksaid. The assailant was caught and their mother, father, and grandfather — who owned the weapon used in the attack — have been detained, the minister added. "When the security of our children is the issue, it is not possible for any negligence, any irresponsibility to be overlooked," the minister said on X. Images and video posted online showed a male figure walking on a street near the school with a rifle in his hands. He was then seen running back from the same street. Video outside the school showed police pushing away families and others outside the premises. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear. Two deadly school shootings in April caused outrage in Turkey and prompted officials to bring in new security measures for the 2026-2027 academic year, including tighter gun controls. Before then, the country had not had a history of such attacks. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin were going to Manisa to carry out inspections.

A woman who sought nearly $5,000 in damages after being bitten by a dog on Christmas Eve has had her claim dismissed, after a British Columbia tribunal ruled the incident amounted to an accident — and that “every dog is entitled to one bite.” Ying Shen was bitten on the hand by a mini Australian Shepherd named Juliet as she stepped out of an elevator in her apartment building in Vancouver on 24 December 2022. The dog, which was leashed and accompanied by neighbour Jeffrey Dale Polo, bit Shen as the two passed each other in the corridor. According to the B.C.
