Trump says Russia and Ukraine reach energy ceasefire 'effective immediately'

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to what he described as an "energy ceasefire", hours after Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy had pushed back against US pressure for a unilateral end to strikes on Russian refineries. In a social media post, Trump said the energy ceasefire would take effect immediately, but did not elaborate further. In an interview with Axios, Zelenskiy said Trump's post was the first he had heard of the deal, though a senior Ukrainian official told Reuters that Ukraine was ready to agree to such a ceasefire if Russia was. Trump, whose war in Iran has been blamed for high diesel prices that are weighing on Republicans' prospects at next month's midterm elections, had previously announced an energy ceasefire in Ukraine in mid-September, though neither side ever confirmed such an agreement was reached. "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukrain...

Trump melts down over Nobel Peace Prize snub, says he deserved eight awards

United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Norway had been left with "an indelible stain, one that will never be forgotten," for not rewarding him with the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that he had "settled eight wars" and had deserved the honour. Trump's remarks came a day after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South Africa's Navi Pillay, the judge who headed the Rwanda genocide tribunal and who last year presided over a United Nations commission which accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Pillay and said, "I know nothing about this woman, and neither does anyone else! In fact, to the best of my knowledge, no one ever heard of her other than the fact that she, very obviously, hates Israel." The US president added, "I don’t know what the woman has done," arguing again that he had "settled 8 Wars, with letters being sent from every president and prime minister from the countries that I helped to the Norwegian Nobel Committee." https://ift.tt/JDQ29Fr Trump also stated that he was "about to settle, or win, two more, Iran and Russia/Ukraine." He said, "They’re both happening at breakneck speed but, forget them, it’s the 8 that I’ve already settled, any one of which, in particular, Pakistan and India, would be far more than necessary to win the Nobel Prize." The US president added, "In actuality, I should have won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes, not just 1," citing eight "wars" that he had "settled", including between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Israel and Hamas. "Additionally, I stopped Iran from having a nuclear weapon and blowing up the entire Middle East and, ultimately, far beyond!" Trump said, claiming that he had "saved more lives than anyone in history." Read: Nobel Peace Prize goes to South African judge despite PM Shehbaz’s hopes for Trump Referring to last year's Nobel winner, Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado, Trump called her "a truly fine person" and stated that Machado "stated to the Media when she gave me her Nobel Prize of last year, 'Donald Trump settled many Wars, and deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than any person that has ever received it.'" Trump added, "Based on my record of PEACE, a record like no one else has ever achieved, I agree!" Further, Trump said he had "got back all of the hostages in Israel, including the final 28, both living and dead, and worked with Hamas to do it — Nobody believed this was possible!" The US president also stated, "I removed the World’s Evil Dictator, Nicolas Maduro, from Venezuela, and am in the process of making Venezuela a rich Democracy." "Likewise, with Iran, I stopped them from destroying Israel, the Middle East, and Europe," he said. He further stated that he was "also preventing, on a constant basis, a War between South Korea and North Korea, and Japan and North Korea." Saying that "numerous other hot spots" have not been involved in wars "only because of President Donald J Trump, and the United States of America." Moving to cite NATO figures, Trump said he was "responsible for having NATO countries increase spending from 2% to 5% of GDP, creating a stronger alliance and defence," which he said was "another thing that everybody said was impossible to do." He added, "I have brought 196 hostages HOME from captivity, from all over the World, and did it without having paid a ransom, unlike Biden and Obama who would pay Billions of Dollars." Adding to his list of claims, Trump said, "On top of it all, I have created a soon-to-be very prosperous Arctic." "Despite all of this, the Nobel Prize was given today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations, who nobody has ever heard of," he stated. The president added, "In all of the Wars that I have settled, I never spoke to the United Nations — they were of no help." Concluding his post, Trump said that "The United States of America, represented by me, as your President, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t." He further claimed that the award had been "forever discredited by a handful of Radical Ideologues who are Anti-Democracy, and Enemies of Civilisation!"

At least 32 miners dead after bridge fails at cobalt site in southeast DR Congo

A bridge collapsed at a cobalt mine in southeast Democratic Republic of Congo killing at least 32 wildcat miners, a regional government official said Sunday. The bridge came down Saturday onto a flooded zone at the mine in Lualaba province, Roy Kaumba Mayonde, the provincial interior minister, told reporters. He said 32 bodies had been recovered and more were being searched for. The DRC produces more than 70 percent of the world supply of cobalt, which is essential for batteries used in electric cars, many laptop computers and mobile phones. More than 200,000 people are estimated to be working in giant illegal cobalt mines in the giant central African country. Local authorities said the bridge collapsed at the Kalando mine, about 42 kilometres (26 miles) southeast of the Lualaba provincial capital, Kolwezi. "Despite a formal ban on access to the site because of the heavy rain and the risk of a landslide, wildcat miners forced their way into the quarry," said Mayonde. He said ...

Arab countries, Pakistan likely to observe Eid on same day

The International Astronomy Centre confirmed on Wednesday that the crescent moon of Shawwal will be impossible to sight on Saturday, March 29, across all regions of the Arab and Islamic world. This is due to the moon setting before the sun, with the conjunction occurring after sunset. As a result, observing the crescent moon, whether by the naked eye, telescopes, or other means, will be unfeasible on March 29. For countries requiring an actual sighting to mark the start of Shawwal, Ramadan will likely extend to 30 days, with Eid Al Fitr falling on Monday, March 31. However, in some regions where the conjunction occurs before sunset, allowing the moon to set after sunset, some countries may choose to declare Eid on Sunday, March 30, following traditional moon-sighting practices. Notably, a partial solar eclipse will be visible at noon on Saturday in parts of the western Arab world, including Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. This event serves as definitive proof that the cresce...

Climate damage fund hailed, but 'needs billions rather than millions'

The launch of a climate "loss and damage" fund drew praise and hundreds of millions of dollars in pledges at the UN's COP28 talks on Thursday but also warnings that much more is needed to help vulnerable nations. "We have delivered history today," the UAE's COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber told delegates who stood and applauded after the decision's adoption in Dubai. The announcement was followed immediately by financial pledges, including 225 million euros ($246 million) from the European Union, $100 million from the United Arab Emirates, another $100 million from Germany, $40 million from Britain, $17.5 million from the United States and $10 million from Japan. After years of dragging their feet on the issue, wealthy nations backed the fund in a landmark agreement at the COP27 summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, last year. Its launch on the first day of COP28 follows fraught negotiations on the mechanics of the fund, which will be housed at the World Bank...
